ONE Step

The ONE Step Program is a health education program focused on protecting children from secondhand smoke and vaping (aerosol) exposure.

ONE Step’s purpose is to create tobacco and nicotine-free environments for children through education, planning, and action. ONE Step provides information to parents/caregivers about the importance of tobacco and nicotine-free places, understanding asthma, and resources for quitting smoking.

ONE Step also includes asthma education, as asthma is the most common chronic condition in children. Asthma education can help people identify and prevent flare-ups that may be caused by secondhand smoke and other environmental triggers. Helping children and caregivers understand what triggers asthma episodes and how to handle them allows kids to spend less time worrying about inhalers and more time just being kids. After all, kids should be able to breathe easily knowing they are safe and protected no matter where they are.

ONE Step Trainings

Trainings are available in-person and online for convenience.

Child Care Directory

This directory showcases childcare providers who go above and beyond to support tobacco and nicotine-free spaces. Centers listed here have earned Gold Standard tobacco and nicotine-free policy recognition and/or completed ONE Step training, reflecting a strong commitment to the health and well-being of children and their communities.

  • Gold Standard Policy: Providers who have adopted a comprehensive tobacco and nicotine-free policy that exceeds minimum requirements and helps protect children, families, and staff from exposure.
  • ONE Step Trained: Providers who have completed specialized training focused on implementing best practices for tobacco and nicotine-free settings.
Child Care Provider Resources

Creating a tobacco-free childcare environment starts with the right tools. Here are resources that child care providers can easily access to materials that support strong tobacco policies, promote health, and help protect children from the danger of secondhand smoke.

Why ONE Step?

There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke; even brief exposure can cause harm. Secondhand smoke is a serious health hazard, causing more than 41,000 deaths per year in the United States. It can cause a wide range of damaging health effects in children and adults including lung cancer, respiratory infections, ear infections and asthma. Children are especially vulnerable to the dangerous effects of secondhand smoke.

How does it work?

The ONE Step program supports and trains Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) and organizations in Tulsa County that serve parents and caregivers to have health-focused conversations with families about:

  • Secondhand smoke (SHS), thirdhand smoke (THS) and aerosol
  • Tobacco and nicotine products
  • The health impacts of SHS, THS and aerosol exposure on children
  • Steps families can take to protect children from SHS, THS and aerosol exposure
  • Local and statewide tobacco cessation resources and support
  • Basic information about asthma and how to manage it

In addition, the American Lung Association will support participating early childhood organizations by reviewing their existing tobacco and nicotine-free policies, ensuring that their policy is comprehensive and offering technical assistance as needed.
