COVID-19 Action Initiative

The American Lung Association's $25M initiative to end COVID-19 and defend against future respiratory virus pandemics.

The COVID-19 Action Initiative will be used to:

Provide

free lung health education and masks to those in need.

Protect

public health by advocating for COVID and flu vaccines in underserved communities of color.

Prevent

future outbreaks by investing in respiratory virus research

The COVID-19 Action Initiative is investing in research, education, advocacy and coalition over the next three years.

Expanding Medical Research

A cornerstone of the COVID-19 Action Initiative will be leveraging our existing research network and funding respiratory virus research.

We plan to do this by:

  • Expanding COVID-19 research within the current studies of the Airways Clinical Research Centers (ACRC) Network;
  • Funding Coronavirus Awards and Grants for preventive research, vaccines, antivirals and to advance future outbreak preparedness;
  • Providing ACRC pilot grants to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 on patients with chronic lung disease.

Public Health Measures

Will allocate funds to provide free lung health education and masks to those in need. Education includes raising awareness of lifesaving COVID and flu vaccinations. Advocacy efforts will focus on addressing racial health disparities and ensuring all Americans have access to quality and affordable healthcare.

Leading Public and Private Forces for Good

We will convene government, private industry and public health organizations to form a coalition that ensures: Better preparedness to meet the virus outbreaks of the future. Increased research collaboration to develop effective vaccines, faster detection tests and new treatments.
