We Need Quality and Affordable Healthcare
On Friday, Dec. 14, 2018 a U.S. District Court judge in Texas ruled that the entire Affordable Care Act (ACA) is unconstitutional. This ruling puts the health of millions of Americans at risk, especially those with pre-existing conditions, such as asthma, COPD and lung cancer. While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, this ruling will be appealed.
This ruling is yet another threat to the healthcare of millions of Americans, but it is important to understand that the current Affordable Care Act remains in place pending the appeal. If you receive healthcare coverage through Healthcare.gov, a marketplace plan or if you are enrolled in a Medicaid expansion plan, nothing has changed with your coverage. You still have comprehensive coverage, including access to prescription drugs, preventive care and many other services. You are still protected from discrimination if you have a pre-existing condition.
The American Lung Association is committed to pushing back against this ruling in order to protect quality and affordable healthcare. The Lung Association and our partners filed a friend-of-the-court brief in this lawsuit and will continue to fight to defend access to quality and affordable health coverage for all Americans, including those pre-existing conditions.
We will keep our constituents up to date as we learn more and will share opportunities for you to engage in support of quality and affordable healthcare, including protections for those with pre-existing conditions.
