This study showed that long COVID patients have a significantly altered gut microbiome. This is important because the gut microbiome, which is the community of bacteria, and other microorganisms critical to regular bodily function, could be a potential biomarker for disease severity and potential therapeutic target. Senior author Peggy Lai, MD, MPH received the Lung Association COVID-19 research award.
