This study found that in people who have smoked, worsening lung changes seen on CT scans are linked to greater risk of severe acute respiratory disease. This is important because it shows that tracking these lung changes can help doctors identify and treat those at higher risk for serious respiratory issues, leading to earlier interventions and better disease management. Co-authors Bina Choi, George Washko, and MeiLan Han are investigators of the Airways Clinical Research Centers.
