SPRINGFIELD, IL | February 2, 2024
Springfield firefighter Justin Stewart is gearing up to lead his team of fellow first responders in the American Lung Association in Illinois’ Fight For Air Climb Springfield. The event, locally presented by CEFCU, will take place at the Wyndham Springfield City Centre on February 10.
Stewart and his team will climb 32 floors and more than 500 steps in full protective gear, with the total extra weight adding up to nearly 40 pounds. The team is undertaking this challenge to not only push themselves physically, but also to raise funds for promoting local lung heath initiatives.
Stewart originally joined the climb for the physical challenge. As a first responder and former athlete, Stewart felt the event would be a fun way to put his skills and stamina to the test. However, as he got more involved, he also got to witness the perseverance of those battling with lung disease firsthand.
“I do a lot of these events, and I get to meet so many people and hear their stories,” said Stewart. “I once climbed the Willis Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the world, beside a man who only had half a lung remaining after his battle with lung disease. It’s stories like his that really put into perspective the importance of the Fight For Air Climb and why we do it.” Stewart remarked.
Stewart will be leading a team of eight other firefighters with a goal of raising $1000 to put towards lung health education programs, research, and advocacy initiatives. The event is open to the local community and invites individuals from all levels of expertise, including beginners.
“As firefighters, every shift is like training for the Fight For Air Climb,” Stewart said. “Climbing 500 steps is a test of strength, but connecting with my fellow climbers is really why it is so fun to do.” Stewart commented.
Join the Springfield Fire Department and the rest of the community on February 10 at the Wyndham City Center for the Fight For Air Climb.
Justin Stewart is available for interviews about the climb, and you can contact Janye Killelea at [email protected] or (312) 940-7624 for requests.
