Memorial’s Newest Lung Cancer Technology Pulls into Broward County on 18-Wheeler

American Lung Association joins Memorial Cancer Institute to test drive technology to enhance screening and cancer care

On Tuesday, October 29, members of the South Florida healthcare community gathered at Memorial Hospital West to preview the latest in lung cancer diagnostics and treatment—on 18 wheels. Memorial Cancer Institute staff led hands-on tours of the new Thoracic Oncology Mobile Experience by Intuitive, which showcases the state-of-the-art robotics and technology on a semi-trailer truck.

Earlier this year, Memorial Healthcare System expanded its robotic surgery program, deploying seven Intuitive da Vinci Xi surgical systems across five of its hospitals. Benefits of minimally invasive surgery include reduced pain and faster recovery time.

To share these important advancements with the South Florida community, lung cancer patients and caregivers, Memorial Cancer Institute and the American Lung Association recorded a behind-the-scenes look at the new technology. The exclusive tour is available here.

“Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. But there is hope. Research has fueled advancements in detection and treatment in the past decade, increasing the survival rate by 44 percent,” said Mark Block, MD, vice chair of the Lung Association’s South Florida Leadership Board and chief of Thoracic Surgery at Memorial Healthcare System. “The new technology we’ve debuted will have an impact in the lives of people with lung cancer: more accurate results, earlier detection and minimally invasive procedures.”

The tour of Memorial’s new lung cancer diagnostic and treatment technology acted as an unofficial kick off to Lung Cancer Awareness Month, which began November 1. The Lung Association is raising awareness about lung cancer, promoting lifesaving lung cancer screening and raising money for critical research. The annual State of Lung Cancer report, which demonstrates the toll of lung cancer in Florida and across the country, will be released on November 19.
