American Lung Association Applauds Governor Reynolds for Signing Biomarker Testing Bill into Law

Under new law, insurance plans will be required to cover biomarker testing for Iowans

On May 1, Governor Kim Reynolds signed HF2668 into law, which will require all Iowa-regulated insurance plans to cover biomarker testing for covered individuals. The Lung Association’s Iowa advocacy director, Kristina Hamilton issued this statement in support:

“The Lung Association thanks the Iowa General Assembly for passing, and Governor Reynolds for signing HF2688 into law. Comprehensive biomarker testing allows doctors to identify abnormalities in a cell’s DNA, which helps healthcare providers determine the best course of treatment for patients. This is a huge advancement in technology and treatment that will now be more widely used by Iowans under HF2668.

“Studies show that lung cancer patients who have access to biomarker testing and are thus able to receive targeted therapy treatments have better overall health outcomes. Biomarker testing is a crucial part of their cancer care and has been incorporated into many clinical guidelines helping doctors make the best decisions for their patients’ health.

“While we know that biomarker testing is important for those with cancer, many individuals may still struggle to get coverage for these tests from their health insurance. Through this new law, many patients who should receive biomarker testing will no longer be unable to do so because of insurance coverage restrictions or high out-of-pocket costs.”

The law takes effect January 1, 2025.
