Governor Reynolds Signs Bill to Reduce Radon Exposure in New Single and Double Family Home Construction into Law

Measure will help address Iowa's second leading cause of lung cancer

Governor Kim Reynolds has signed HF 2297 into law, which requires new single family and two-family residential construction to include a passive radon mitigation system. Kristina Hamilton, the American Lung Association’s Iowa advocacy director issued this statement in response:

"Yesterday, Iowa took action to protect the health of Iowan families. HF 2297 ensures the new homes families are moving into have a mitigation system to help protect them from radon exposure. Additionally, families will not have to pay the expense of having their house retrofitted with a passive mitigation system.

“Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Iowa has some of the highest average radon concentrations in the U.S. Right now, 70% of homes have radon levels that are above the recommended action level.

“This bill is an essential step in safeguarding the health of Iowans and preventing lung cancer. That is why we applaud Governor Reynolds for signing this legislation into law.”
