Iowa Health Initiative Releases New Tobacco Tax Polling Data

Today, the Iowa Health Initiative released the results of a recent poll conducted amongst 615 Iowa voters. The poll looked at multiple proposed tax initiatives, one of which was increasing the tobacco tax.

According to poll results, 66% of Iowans—across political parties—are in favor of increasing the tax on tobacco/nicotine and 66% are in favor of a $1.50 increase in the state cigarette tax where part of the revenue will be dedicated to tobacco use reduction programs, particularly among youth.

“The results show that now more than ever, the increase in the tobacco tax here in Iowa is necessary and welcomed by Iowans. We urge the legislature to move forward when called upon to increase taxes on tobacco products and reinvest to protect the next generation,” said Kristina Hamilton, director of advocacy at the American Lung Association. “Iowa is ready for the next chapter in tobacco control and increasing the cigarette tax by $1.50 helps the state turn the page, we urge the legislature to pass HF 2406.”
