American Lung Association to Honor Local Oncologist at LUNG FORCE Walk

Dr. Andrew Salner, of Hartford HealthCare, to receive Medical Honoree Award at Hartford LUNG FORCE Walk on June 6

The American Lung Association in Connecticut is pleased to announce that Dr. Andrew Salner will receive the Medical Honoree Award at the Hartford LUNG FORCE Walk on Saturday, June 6.

We are pleased to recognize Dr. Salner with the Medical Honoree Award for his commitment to lung cancer screening in the state of Connecticut,” said Daniel Miramontes, Executive Director at the American Lung Association in Connecticut.

Andrew L. Salner, M.D. FACR FASTRO is currently the Medical Director of the Hartford HealthCare Institute at Hartford Hospital, where he also serves as the Ned C. and Janet C. Rice Chair, Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center.  He has also served as medical Director for Cancer Care Delivery and Disparities Research at Hartford HealthCare.

I’m so excited to be awarded this great honor for this year’s Hartford LUNG FORCE Walk,” said Dr, Salner. “The American Lung Association's work in lung cancer screening makes a huge impact on local programs like the ones we implement here at the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute. I'm looking forward to walking alongside my colleagues and the Lung Association in the fight for lung health."

Dr. Salner received his bachelor’s degree and M.D. Degree from Brown University.  He served a Residency in Internal Medicine at Hartford Hospital, a Fellowship in Radiation Oncology at the Joint Center for Radiation Therapy at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, and subsequently served on staff at Dana Farber and Beth Israel Hospital. In 1982 he was named the Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Hartford Hospital, a position he held for 34 years.  He was named Director of the Hospital’s Cancer Program in 1991, a role he has now held for 35 years.  He served as Hartford Hospital’s site PI as a National Cancer Institute Community Cancer Center 2007-2014.

Hartford Hospital serves as the flagship of a large 8 hospital system, Hartford HealthCare, which has developed a cancer institute across all of its hospitals and cancer centers. Dr. Salner provides leadership for the Institute at Hartford Hospital. His research interests include cancer genomics, cancer screening, radiopharmaceutical therapy, cancer disparities, and cancer survivorship. He has been a leader in lung cancer screening innovations.

Dr. Salner will be awarded alongside his Hartford HealthCare colleagues at the Hartford LUNG FORCE Walk on June 6 at Great River Park in East Hartford, CT.

The LUNG FORCE Walk supports the work of the Lung Association to end lung cancer, improve the air we breathe, reduce the burden of lung disease on individuals and their families and create a tobacco-free future. Ninety cents of every dollar raised goes directly to research, programming and advocacy. Walkers will start making their way through Great River Park in East Hartford at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
