American Lung Association Awards Two Gayle Ann Traver Pulmonary Scholarships to Nurses in Connecticut and Ohio

Today the American Lung Association announced the recipients of the Gayle Ann Traver Pulmonary Scholarship, an award given to nursing or respiratory care practitioner students who exemplify Traver’s contributions to the profession of nursing and dedication on behalf of her patients.  Angela Medved and Shea Gerstenmaier were each awarded with a $5,000 scholarship as they complete Masters of Nursing degrees at Case Western Reserve University Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and Western Connecticut State University respectively.

“Gayle Ann Traver inspired advanced practice nurses for decades with her tenacity, commitment and professionalism, and she wrote some of the first texts and publications describing nursing’s role in the care of respiratory patients,” said Michelle Caul, Eastern Division Director of Health Promotions for the American Lung Association. “We are proud to help carry on her legacy through nurses like Angela and Shea.”

Angela Medved plans to specialize as an acute and primary pediatric nurse practitioner after completing her Masters degree. She says, “I hope to continue promoting health in my community. My passion for pediatrics and my nursing education will help me to provide quality care for acute or chronic conditions in children, such as asthma and pneumonia. This scholarship from the American Lung Association will allow me to continue supporting children and families in their everyday health.”

Shea Gerstenmaier is pursuing a Masters in Nursing with a focus in Adult-Gerontology.  Upon graduation, she plans to obtain a Nurse Practitioner License.  She says, “I am so very grateful to be chosen as a recipient of the Gayle Ann Traver Pulmonary Nurse Scholarship.  As I continue my work with pulmonary patients, I hope to provide an additional level of care for patients with pulmonary disease. My goal is to help patients get the help they need when sick, educate them about preventive and proactive care, and hopefully prevent the need for hospitalization.”
