ComEd Makes Significant Investment in Chicagoland Air Quality, Lung Health Programs

ComEd, one of the nation’s leading energy providers, made a large investment to improve lung health and air quality in Chicagoland. The company signed on as presenting sponsor for the Fight For Air Climb at Oakbrook Terrace Tower, set for February 8 in the Chicago suburbs. Through the sponsorship, ComEd made an investment of $15,000 to fund local programs to help people impacted by lung disease and improve air quality.

The Fight For Air Climb invites individuals, families, groups of friends, corporate teams and first responders to climb the tallest tower in the Chicago suburbs. For the event, participants climb Oakbrook Terrace Tower, for a total of 31 floors, 680 stairs.

“Through events like the Fight For Air Climb, we are able to fund our work to improve air quality, educate residents on lung health and help people who suffer from lung disease,” said Kristen Young, executive director for the Lung Association. “But we can’t do it alone. Our partnership with ComEd helps us provide vital support to the Chicagoland community. From funding asthma education, to providing resources to those suffering from lung cancer, this support makes people’s lives better every day.”

More than 1.4 million people suffer from lung disease in Illinois, and this year alone, it is estimated that 9,000 will be diagnosed with lung cancer. Additionally, the Chicago area is listed as the 18th most polluted city in the nation for ozone.

“ComEd is privileged to power the lives of families and businesses across northern Illinois. We also play an important role in improving the lives of people in these communities who are affected by some of the worst vehicular air pollution in the nation,” said Joe Dominguez, CEO of ComEd. “We work to help our customers and communities reduce local air pollution by delivering energy from clean sources, supporting electric transportation and sponsoring meaningful efforts like the Fight For Air Climb.”

ComEd is a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corporation. The company provides service to approximately four million customers across northern Illinois, or 70 percent of the state’s population.

The Fight For Air Climb at Oakbrook Terrace Tower was the first Lung Association stair climb event in the country. This is the 29th year of the event. Since the first year, the Fight For Air Climb has raised more than one million dollars.
