COLUMBUS, OH | April 30, 2025
Next week, the American Lung Association in Ohio kicks off Lung Cancer Action Week (May 5-11) in Columbus to raise awareness of lung cancer and encourage residents to take action to end the disease.
In Columbus, hundreds of health advocates will take the State Capitol for Advocacy Day (May 7) to meet with lawmakers to advocate for lung health provision in the state budget. Media is invited to attend the event and interview members of the Ohio advocate group.
In addition, Lung Association also urges people to take these five actions during this special week to help end lung cancer:
- Wear turquoise between May 5-11, 2025.
- Share your lung cancer story to raise awareness and inspire hope.
- Get screened for lung cancer if you are eligible.
- Test your home for radon.
- Donate to help achieve a world free of lung cancer.
“In 2025 alone, it is estimated that almost 10,000 Ohio residents will be diagnosed with lung cancer. But there is hope. We have seen incredible advancements in early diagnosis, treatment and survivorship from lung cancer. In fact, the five-year survival rate has increased by over 50% in the past decade,” said Brittany Sinzinger, Executive Director of the Lung Association in Ohio. “Raising awareness and funds for lung cancer is more important than ever. We encourage our community to get involved in Lung Cancer Action Week.”
Since 2014, LUNG FORCE has raised over $32 million for lifesaving lung cancer research, expanding its research commitment by 140%. Through education, advocacy and research, LUNG FORCE is working to ensure that fewer people are diagnosed and those living with the disease live longer.
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths, with someone diagnosed approximately every two minutes in the U.S. Thankfully, survival rates have significantly increased, aided by improved early detection through screening and more than 65 new FDA-approved treatments since 2016.
