Lung Association urges public to take five actions to help save lives, raise awareness of lung cancer

Next week, the American Lung Association in Ohio kicks off Lung Cancer Action Week in Cleveland to raise awareness of lung cancer and encourage residents to take action to end the disease.

The annual Lung Cancer Action Week (May 5-11, 2025) unites America to stand together against lung cancer.

In Cleveland, multiple buildings and landmarks will turn turquoise (the designated color of Lung Cancer Action Week) during the observance including Terminal Tower (May 9), Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (May 5) and Premier Bank in Youngstown (May 5).

The State of Ohio has also issued a statewide proclamation in honor of the special week, along with the
City of Cleveland, City of Independence and City of Canton.

Local businesses are also taking action by giving back portions of proceeds. Kendra Scott has a 20% “giveback” at their Woodmere store (28699 Chagrin Blvd, Woodmere, OH 44122). The “giveback” is also available online from May 8–10 using code GIVEBACK-JELCW at checkout. Scout & Cellar also has a 10% “giveback” the entire month of May use this special link: https://scoutandcellar.com/?u=WineWithConnie.

The Lung Association also shares seven actions people can take this week to help end lung cancer:

  1. Wear turquoise between May 5-11, 2025.
  2. Share your lung cancer story to raise awareness and inspire hope.
  3. Get screened for lung cancer if you are eligible.
  4. Test your home for radon.
  5. Donate to help achieve a world free of lung cancer.

“In 2025 alone, it is estimated that 10,000 Ohio residents will be diagnosed with lung cancer. But there is hope. We have seen incredible advancements in early diagnosis, treatment and survivorship from lung cancer. In fact, the five-year survival rate has increased by over 50% in the past decade,” said Kim Covey, Executive Director of the Lung Association in Ohio. “Raising awareness and funds for lung cancer is more important than ever. We encourage our community to get involved in Lung Cancer Action Week.”

Since 2014, LUNG FORCE has raised over $32 million for lifesaving lung cancer research, expanding its research commitment by 140%. Through education, advocacy and research, LUNG FORCE is working to ensure that fewer people are diagnosed and those living with the disease live longer.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths, with someone diagnosed approximately every two minutes in the U.S. Thankfully, survival rates have significantly increased, aided by improved early detection through screening and more than 65 new FDA-approved treatments since 2016.
