CHICAGOLAND FIREFIGHTERS INVITED TO CLIMB PRESIDENTIAL TOWERS IN 'FIRST ALERT® FIREFIGHTER CHALLENGE'

Firefighter Fundraising Competition Supports American Lung Association Research

Every step counts on Sunday, March 8, when thousands will join in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood to climb the Presidential Towers in the American Lung Association’s annual Fight For Air Climb. As the city’s biggest stair climb, this annual event brings climbers of all ages together for one mission – to raise money for the 32 million Americans affected by lung disease.

As a special addition to the climb, firefighters across Chicagoland are invited to participate in the First Alert® Firefighter Challenge where they will compete against each other while climbing in full gear. Firefighters will compete in teams of five or more for the winning titles of the fastest fire department and top fundraising team.

“As an Illinois company, we proudly support our area fire services and look forward to working together to raise money and awareness for such an important cause,” said Tarsila Wey, director of marketing for First Alert, the most trusted brand in home safety*. “We hope to encourage as many firefighters as possible to join us for the First Alert Firefighter Challenge.”

Firefighter teams are required to climb in full gear, with a helmet, mask, boots and air tank, which can add up to 75 pounds of extra weight as they tackle the 180 floors and 2,340 stairs of the four Presidential Towers.

“In the line of duty, firefighters are regularly exposed to smoke, gasses, chemicals and other substances that can be damaging to their lungs, putting them at an increased risk for lung disease,” said Kristen Young, executive director of the Lung Association. “Firefighters are saving lives every day, and the Lung Association hopes to help through our work on preventing lung disease and finding a cure for lung cancer. We are honored that so many local heroes participate in our event.”

Over the last several years, the Fight for Air Climbs in communities across the country have raised more than $53 million to support research, education and advocacy efforts for the Lung Association.
