National Take the Stairs Day: Charlotte Steps Up for Clean Air and Healthy Lungs This Year

American Lung Association encourages the Charlotte community to take the stairs and then support lung health by signing up for the Fight For Air Climb

This Wednesday, January 10 is National Take the Stairs Day, and the American Lung Association in North Carolina is challenging people across Charlotte and beyond to skip the elevator and take the stairs for clean air and healthy lungs. The community can further support lung health by registering for the Fight For Air Climb Charlotte on Saturday, March 23.

National Take the Stairs Day is an annual observance on the second Wednesday of January that gives people an opportunity to adopt healthy routines like taking the stairs. Stair climbing has significant health benefits, including improving balance and coordination strengthening major muscle groups. Consistent stair climbing as a daily activity can help lower mortality risk.

“Many people make resolutions to adopt healthier habits in the New Year, so National Take the Stairs Day is a fantastic way to kick off those goals, as well as exercise your lungs,” said Jessica Graham, immediate past chair of the Lung Association’s North Carolina Leadership Board and founder and CEO of Fionix Consulting. “We’re also inviting the Charlotte community to take it a step further by joining us for the Fight For Air Climb Charlotte on March 23. It’s an opportunity to do good and feel great!”

This year marks the 11th anniversary of the Fight For Air Climb Charlotte, the premier stair-climbing event in Charlotte. The climb is designed for every type of participant, from beginners to competitive climbers to first responders in full gear. Participants determine their pace. With 50 floors and 883 stairs, the VUE is the perfect setting for a day of fun, challenge and camaraderie.

Here in North Carolina, more than 1.4 million people live with lung disease, including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Participation in the Fight For Air Climb Charlotte provides critical funds to help the American Lung Association work to end lung disease and save lives through research, education and advocacy.
