LUNG FORCE Run/Walk Returns to Folly Beach on November 15 with Mission to End Lung Cancer

American Lung Association’s 12th annual event, held during Lung Cancer Awareness Month, raises funds for lifesaving research, early detection initiatives and programming

The American Lung Association in South Carolina is inviting the Charleston community to unite as One Mighty FORCE for lung health by participating in the LUNG FORCE Run/Walk. The 12th annual 5K and festivities will take place right on the beach at Folly Beach County Park on Saturday, November 15. Join us as we run, walk, jog and stroll in the sand with family and friends!

The LUNG FORCE Run/Walk is also an occasion to recognize Lung Cancer Awareness Month by celebrating the lung cancer survivors in our lives, honoring the memory of those we’ve lost and uplifting those who need our support.

“This Lung Cancer Awareness Month, we are calling for the Charleston community to help put an end to lung cancer and lung disease one step at a time,” said LUNG FORCE Run/Walk co-chairs Eleanor Hardy and Elaine Carew. “Thanks to the support of our participants, volunteers and sponsors, we’re closing in on $1 million raised since the LUNG FORCE campaign launched in 2015. $1 million in funding is the equivalent of supporting nearly 5.5 years of lung cancer research. Thanks to advancements in diagnosis and treatment, more people are surviving lung cancer than ever before. Please join us to keep up the momentum and save more lives.”

The LUNG FORCE Run/Walk is known for its hopeful and welcoming atmosphere. Participants are encouraged to dress in turquoise outfits and accessories, such as tutus and boas. Turquoise, the signature color of LUNG FORCE, represents the Lung Association’s effort to bring people together to stand against lung cancer and serves as a symbol of hope.

The LUNG FORCE Run/Walk begins and ends at the Dunes House. Participants may run or walk the 5K beach route, which offers timed results for runners. Everyone is welcome—individuals of all fitness levels, lung cancer survivors, caregivers, families, company teams and even four-legged friends. Registration is $40. For more information, and to register, visit LUNGFORCE.org/Charleston.

The LUNG FORCE Run/Walk supports lifesaving research, programs and advocacy for the 765,000 South Carolinians living with lung disease, including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. The rate of new lung cancer cases in South Carolina is significantly higher than the national rate, with more than 4,700 South Carolinians predicted to be diagnosed this year alone. Lung cancer screening saves lives by detecting the disease early, when it’s more likely to be curable. Visit SavedByTheScan.org to learn about low-dose CT lung cancer screening tests and take the quiz to see if you should get screened.
