Lung Association Applauds Proclamation Recognizing Lung Cancer Action Week in California

Assemblymember Robert Garcia raises critical awareness of lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths in Calfiornia.

Today, the American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE initiative celebrates Lung Cancer Action Week in California, proclaimed the second week of May, uniting America to stand against lung cancer, the nation’s leading cause of cancer deaths.

Assemblymember Robert Garcia of Rancho Cucamonga authored House Resolution 35  recognizing the second week of May as Lung Cancer Action Week 2025 in California.

“Lung cancer continues to impact residents of California, highlighting the urgent need to increase visibility about the leading cause of cancer deaths and save more lives,” said Assemblymember Robert Garcia. “Today and every second week of May moving forward, California will dedicate this week to educating the public about lung cancer and raising awareness for this vitally important cause.”

While lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths among both women and men, the five-year survival rate—the percentage of people who are still alive five years after being diagnosed—has increased by 44% in the past decade.

“Lung cancer has been overlooked for far too long, but since the launch of LUNG FORCE, the American Lung Association has made remarkable progress in transforming how this disease is perceived,” said Kesa Bruce, Director of Advocacy with the American Lung Association in California. “We are deeply grateful that California is taking meaningful steps to raise awareness about and funds for lung cancer during Lung Cancer Action Week through this proclamation. The Lung Association extends heartfelt thanks to Assemblymember Garcia for sponsoring our important initiative, and for his work on AB 914 to cut diesel cancer risk. The work is driven by the unwavering commitment and involvement of lung cancer patients and their loved ones here in California.”

Since its inception in 2014, LUNG FORCE has raised more than $32 million for lifesaving lung cancer research, expanding our research commitment by over 140%.
