May 9: It’s Time to Step Up Buffalo! Hundreds Set to Climb for Lung Health in Fight For Air Climb at Sahlen Field

Lung Association event supports local efforts to end lung disease and support clean air

Media is asked to save the date for the American Lung Association’s Fight For Air Climb Buffalo. The family-friendly event will take place on Saturday, May 9 at Sahlen Field in Buffalo, home of the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. Hundreds of climbers of all fitness levels, ages 8 and up will make their way up and down the stadium steps starting at 8:30 a.m. in support of lung health and clean air.

Individuals, families, corporate teams, and firefighters in full gear will climb 500 steps to not only help find a cure for lung disease but raise awareness and critical funds to help nearly 2.4 million New Yorkers living with lung disease.

“We’re excited for the community to come together for the Fight For Air Climb Buffalo,” said Kaelyn Gates, Executive Director for the American Lung Association of Western New York. “Funds raised will go to local services, programs, advocacy and research we provide here in New York.”

This year’s climb will once again feature a friendly Firefighter Challenge with firefighters from across New York competing for the best time.

Firefighters are regularly exposed to smoke, gases, chemicals, and other substances that can be damaging to their lungs, putting them at an increased risk for lung disease. The lung health effects from firefighting include lingering cough, hoarseness, asthma, and bronchitis. Extreme cases include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung and bronchial cancers.

The first wave of climbers is set to start climbing at 8:30 a.m. with the last wave scheduled to step off at 1:00 p.m. We hope to see you at Sahlen Field…because if you can’t breathe, nothing else matters.

Registration for the Fight For Air Climb Buffalo is $35 and includes a $100 fundraising minimum. For more information, and to register, visit ClimbBuffalo.org.
