National Take the Stairs Day: Atlanta Steps Up for Clean Air and Healthy Lungs This Year

American Lung Association encourages the Atlanta community to take the stairs and then support lung health by signing up for the Fight For Air Climb

This Wednesday, January 10 is National Take the Stairs Day, and the American Lung Association in Georgia is challenging people across Atlanta and beyond to skip the elevator and take the stairs for clean air and healthy lungs. The community can further support lung health by registering for the Fight For Air Climb Atlanta on Saturday, April 20.

National Take the Stairs Day is an annual observance on the second Wednesday of January that gives Americans an opportunity to adopt healthy routines like taking the stairs. Stair climbing has significant health benefits, including improving balance and coordination strengthening major muscle groups. Consistent stair climbing as a daily activity can help lower mortality risk.

“Many people make resolutions to adopt healthier habits in the New Year, so National Take the Stairs Day is a fantastic way to kick off those goals, as well as exercise your lungs,” said Dr. Jannifer Harper, chair of the Lung Association’s Georgia Leadership Board. “We’re also inviting the Atlanta community to take it a step further by joining us for the Fight For Air Climb Atlanta on April 20. It’s an opportunity to feel great while raising critical funds for lung health!”

This year marks the 18th anniversary of the Fight For Air Climb Atlanta, the premier stair-climbing event in Atlanta. The climb is designed for every type of participant, from beginners to competitive climbers to first responders in full gear. Participants determine their pace. With 40 floors and more than 800 stairs, Promenade Tower in Midtown Atlanta is the perfect setting for a day of fun, challenge and camaraderie.

Here in Georgia, nearly 1.4 million people live with lung disease, including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Participation in the Fight For Air Climb Atlanta provides critical funds to help the American Lung Association work to end lung disease and save lives through research, education and advocacy.
