Dr. Brian Christman is professor and vice-chair for clinical affairs and associate program director, Medicine Residency Program at Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Christman completed his undergraduate studies at Tulane University as a biochemistry major. He attended medical school at the University of Oklahoma before moving to Vanderbilt University for training in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine. He has been on the faculty at Vanderbilt since 1987 engaged in research, teaching and patient care. During this time, he has served as the fellowship program director for pulmonary/critical care, associate director of the Vanderbilt University Hospital Medical ICU, and as chair of the faculty senate.

Dr. Christman's areas of expertise include COPD, pulmonary hypertension, critical care, asthma and healthy air, health effects of radon gas, influenza, lung cancer screening, pediatric asthma, pneumonia and the health effects of climate change. Dr. Christman has published more than 100 journal articles and book chapters.

Dr. Christman has had diverse research interests over the years with support from the American Lung Association, Parker B. Francis Foundation, the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute and the National Cancer Institute. Areas of focus have included mechanisms of airway hyper-responsiveness after lung inflammation, acute lung injury, and pulmonary vascular remodeling as they apply to diseases like asthma, COPD, acute respiratory distress syndrome and pulmonary hypertension.

An active volunteer for the American Lung Association, Dr. Christman serves on research review committees, the Board of Directors for the American Lung Association of Tennessee and on the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Lung Association.

In his spare time, he tries his hand at woodturning and furniture making, all in the presence of appropriate dust remediation equipment, of course.
