My lung cancer was found during a yearly breast MRI. The radiologist’s report said my breasts were clear, but there was a spot on my left lung. My pulmonologist and surgeon were both certain it was cancer, although a biopsy and PET scan were negative. I trusted my doctors and had a lobectomy. It was stage 1 adenocarcinoma, but it was contained and no further treatment was required. I had never smoked — never even held a cigarette. I was 64 years old at the time. My surgeon said there has been an increased number of women in my age group with lung cancer who have never smoked. I would urge all women to get a chest X-ray and screening for lung cancer.
