In August 2025, two incredible women who mean the world to me and my family — Leighann “LaLa” (Hamilton) Boatman and Frances “Muffy” Pope — were diagnosed with lung cancer within days of each other. Their paths were different, but their stories changed our lives forever.
LaLa went into the hospital with what looked like pneumonia. Tests revealed stage 1 lung cancer. After multiple surgeries and a long, painful recovery, she fought her way back. Today, she is cancer-free — living proof that early detection saves lives.
Just days later, Muffy wasn’t feeling well and went to the hospital. Her diagnosis was swift and devastating: stage 4 lung cancer. Three weeks later, we lost her.
Two women. Two diagnoses. Two drastically different outcomes.
Their stories — one of survival, one of heartbreaking loss — remind us every day that lung cancer doesn’t always whisper. It hides behind everyday symptoms. It strikes without warning. And sometimes, it steals someone before we ever get the chance to fight.
This is why we are raising awareness.
This is why we are raising funds.
This is why we are leading LaLa & Muffy’s Air Force in the American Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climb.
Because no family should have to experience what ours did.
Because early detection gave LaLa a second chance — a chance Muffy never had.
Because research, education and advocacy save lives.
Because every dollar brings us closer to better screenings, better treatments and better outcomes.
My team and I carry LaLa’s victory and Muffy’s memory with us in everything we do. One reminds us why hope matters. The other reminds us why action cannot wait.
This is for them — and for every person whose story is still being written.
The Fight for Air Climb is a unique event where individuals and teams race, run or walk the stairs of the Bank of America building in downtown Tampa. This will be my and Laurie’s first year running as members of Team LaLa & Muffy’s Air Force, and our team is growing.
