My brother died at the age of 70 of lung cancer, and my mother at age 92. Soon after my mother passed away, it just seemed to make sense to request a scan of my lungs. All of us smoked at some point in our lives. I smoked for 15 years.
Cancer was detected in my right upper lobe. It was small but growing rapidly. I had an amazing surgeon who removed the lobe and the lymph nodes. Fortunately, the cancer was caught early enough. My lymph nodes were clear. No radiation or chemo.
The statistics of it being caught in time are so low. It’s so important to have a scan. I don’t understand why it isn’t routine like a mammogram or colonoscopy. It definitely should be.
After having a scan and blood work every six months for five years, I am cancer free.
