Dylan S., NJ

Hi, my name is Dylan. I was born on my mom’s 27th week. I was 3 months early. I almost died. I was on oxygen from a baby until I was 7 years old. I was also born with some cognitive disabilities. I had OT and PT come to my house when I was little, and I had nurses come to my house as well. When I turned 7, by some miracle, I got off oxygen and was able to breathe better until 2024. I had to go back on oxygen, and I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis and then pseudomonas.

I defeated pseudomonas even though I have a compromised immune system. I am also living in an independent living complex for adults with special needs, and nothing will stop me from living independently just because I have a chronic lung condition.

I wouldn’t be here where I am today without my mom. She has taught me how to be strong, independent and how to face challenges. She has always told me we can’t focus on what’s going to happen in the future but focus on right now and leave it into God’s hands and to have faith. It was hard because I have gone through one challenge after the next, but I persevered through everything I have gone through. I defeated pseudomonas and defeated pneumonia.

I have gone through so much in my life. I still put on a smile. I’m sure there are days, because it is hard living with this condition and having oxygen, I may not like it, but I have accepted it. All I can do is accept it and live my best life I can. I wouldn’t be here without the support of my friends and family, but the biggest supporters are my mom and Andrea.

Thank you for listening to my story. I hope this inspires others with chronic lung conditions like bronchiectasis and shows awareness.
