Dr. Hayden is currently the James Lowenstine Professor of Medicine and professor of pathology, and director of the Division of Infectious Diseases and of the Division of Clinical Microbiology at Rush University Medical Center. Her research interests focus on the epidemiology and control of antibiotic-resistant pathogens in healthcare settings, and on emerging pathogens. She has served on numerous national committees including the CDC Healthcare Infection Control and Prevention Advisory Committee (HICPAC) and the CDC Office of Infectious Diseases Board of Scientific Counselors. She is currently president elect of the board of directors of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, Chair of the Infectious Diseases Society of America Diagnostics Committee, and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.

Dr. Hayden received her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Northwestern University and went on to receive her MD at University of Minnesota Medical School  prior to her residency at the University of Chicago Medical Center and her fellowship in infectious disease at Rush University Medical Center.
