Nevada Utilities Need to Invest More in Clean, Non-Combustion Renewable Electricity

American Lung Association will testify at the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada Las Vegas Consumer Session against continued reliance on fossil fuels

Today, the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) will host a second general consumer session in Las Vegas. This is an opportunity for consumers to raise concerns about any utility issues. Melissa Ramos, senior manager of clean air advocacy, will testify on the need for more zero-emission solutions in NV Energy’s proposed 2024 Integrated Resource Plan.

The latest Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) by NV Energy includes three new solar and battery projects, two new methane gas plants, and significantly reduced investment for infrastructure needed to support transportation electrification. The full IRP is available for public view on the PUCN website using the docket number: 24-05041.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas contributing significantly to air pollution and climate burdens. The pollutants associated with methane production include volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can cause cancer, respiratory irritation, and premature death as well as contribute to ground-level ozone.

“NV Energy’s proposed 2024 IRP includes two new natural gas plants that will cost ratepayers millions to build and lock in another generation of dependence on fossil fuels,” said Melissa Ramos, Senior Manager, Clean Air Advocacy at the American Lung Association. “We urge the Public Utilities Commission to protect consumers by pushing for equitable investments in renewable energy solutions instead of ensuring more fossil combustion for Nevada’s energy grid.”

A report by the American Lung Association “Zeroing in on Healthy Air” looks at the health and climate benefits of zero-emission transportation and electricity. Transitioning away from fossil-fuels to zero-emission vehicles and renewable energy would yield $7.5 billion in public health savings for Nevadans between 2020 and 2050.

“Our regulators need to consider non-combustion energy solutions including solar, battery storage, and expanded infrastructure for transportation electrification,” said Ramos. “We can secure a strong clean energy future without sacrificing the health of Nevadan’s.”
