This study found that IFN-λ, a type of protein that helps fight infections, helps the immune system clear SARS-CoV-2 and build long lasting protection by supporting key immune cells in the lungs. This is important because it shows how immune defenses might be improved against the virus that causes COVID-19. Co-author Jacob Yount, PhD, received a COVID-19 and Emerging Respiratory Viruses Research Award from the Lung Association.
