Lung Association Urges Rhode Islanders to Step Up for National Take the Stairs Day to Support Lung Health

American Lung Association’s Fight For Air Climb pairs fitness with philanthropy to raise funds for lung diseases including COVID-19, asthma and lung cancer

Today, Wednesday, January 12 is National Take the Stairs Day, and the American Lung Association in Rhode Island is challenging people in Providence to adopt healthy habits in the new year by taking the stairs, and then support lung health by registering for the Fight For Air Climb.

National Take the Stairs Day is an annual observance on the second Wednesday of January that gives Americans an opportunity to adopt healthy routines like taking the stairs. Stair climbing is a great way to burn calories but is also a simple way to improve your overall health. According to The Journal of the American Medical Association’s Physical Activities Guidelines for Americans, experts recommend small changes to daily activities such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

The Lung Association encourages residents to take the stairs on National Take the Stairs Day, and then sign up for the Fight For Air Climb Providence to tackle the 350 stairs of Pierce Memorial Stadium on May 7, 2022. In honor of National Take the Stairs Day, the Lung Association is offering a discounted $5 registration fee through January 16th.

Money raised at the Fight For Air Climb will fund the Lung Association’s efforts to end lung cancer and lung disease, as well as support the organization’s COVID-19 Action Initiative. The COVID-19 Action Initiative is a $25 million investment to address COVID-19 and protect against future respiratory virus pandemics.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is shining an even brighter light on the importance of lung health,” said Daniel Bowler, executive director for the Lung Association in Rhode Island. “National Take the Stairs Day is a great way to improve your own lung health, and then the community’s health by supporting the Lung Association’s Fight For Air Climb.”

The Providence Fight For Air Climb challenges residents to climb 350 steps in the iconic Pierce Memorial Stadium. The Lung Association is also offering a “Climb Your Way” option for those who can’t make it to the physical event.
