The American Lung Association in South Florida is recognizing Energy Awareness Month by hosting a free webinar with tips to improve home energy use and the air we all breathe on Tuesday, October 24 at noon. “Reduce Your Use: Residential Energy Management Tips,” sponsored by Florida Power & Light, will feature residential energy expert Brad Goar, program manager of Home Energy Survey and Low-Income Weatherization Programs for Florida Power & Light, and Dr. Mark J. Hauser, chair of the Lung Association’s South Florida Local Leadership Board. Each year, the utility performs more than 100,000 Home Energy Surveys, which provides homeowners with information to understand the energy efficiency of their homes.
Too many individuals in America live with air that is unhealthy to breathe. Our energy sources and use - from the way we heat, cool and power our homes and businesses, to how we travel – play an important role in air quality. Air pollution poses a serious health threat and can trigger illness, hospitalizations and premature death. Here in Florida, the more than 2.7 million people who live with lung disease, including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution.
Individuals can do their part to improve air quality and protect lung health by improving their energy usage, considering alternate forms of energy and transitioning to cleaner, more energy efficient appliances at home. During the webinar, Goar will leverage his insights managing Florida Power & Light’s Home Energy Survey Program to help participants understand how to monitor and manage energy use. Dr. Hauser has a background in pulmonology and will speak to methods of making homes healthier. Our panelists will also share tips to conserve energy and leverage energy efficiency resources and appliances.
