Maria S : NY

Picture from Maria S

May 2013 I was diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. I am being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. The tumor on my spine was excruciating and prohibited me from standing erect. Therefore, we had to address that first before the lung cancer with a spinal fusion and laminectomy, followed with ten rounds of radiation.

Now, the first line of attack was six round of the aggressive treatment Cisplatin.

By the grace of the good Lord, it started shrinking!

After the Cisplatin, I was on Avastin and Pemetrexed every 3 to 5 weeks for 4 years. There were some side effects from the maintenance treatment such as neuropathy, fatigue etc. but life is great!

August 2017, I noticed my balance was a little off and I difficultly with word retrieval. I discussed it with my oncologist and we scheduled a brain MRI. Sadly, a tumor was on my left frontal lobe which affects my motor skills. I had to stop Avastin since increase the risk of bleeding. Post surgery I had some complications. Seizures. Learn to speak again, memory, movement on my right side — walking, lifting my arm, writing, etc.

Months of rehabilitation, to this day continue occupational and physical therapies, controlling seizures through medication, was not permitted to drive for a year.

I continue with my monthly treatment maintenance but Pemetrexed only.

By the grace of God and with the unconditional love and support of my amazing caregivers, my family, I will celebrate my six year survivor anniversary next month!
