NEW YORK , NY | June 6, 2022
The American Lung Association today announced that National Grid and PSEG Long Island are joining the annual Fight for Air Climb New York City, as the event returns to its original home in midtown, PENN 1 (previously One Penn Plaza) this Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 9 a.m. Approximately 300 participants will climb 55 floors and 1,210 steps of the building while working toward a world free of lung disease.
“Our Fight For Air Climb New York City shines a light on what the fight for air is really like for people with lung disease, and it brings our community together in both solidarity and in the spirit of hope,” said Erica Masin Executive Director for the American Lung Association in Metro New York. “Sponsors like PSEG Long Island and National Grid empower us to reach more families and first responders who now no longer have to fight alone. We are so grateful to all of our sponsors and climbers for playing a part in our mission to save lives by improving lung health.”
Participants of all fitness levels are invited to climb alone or with a team, often experiencing a “fight for air” similar to what those with lung disease face daily as they strive to reach the top steps. The Fight For Air Climb is a national campaign of the American Lung Association that occurs in cities all around the country. The events are often supported by local firefighters and first responders who climb in full gear to represent their “fight for air” in the line of duty, on every single call they get. The Climb will support research, advocacy and education for lung diseases, lung cancer and COVID-19 with a fundraising goal of raising $185,000.
“National Grid is proud to support the American Lung Association in the Fight for Air Climb by raising awareness for lung disease. Spending more time at home during a pandemic not only highlighted how much energy we use every day, but also the importance of indoor air quality and lung health. That is why we introduced rebates for Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV’s), energy efficiency equipment, which cleans the air inside a home and reduces energy usage. Improving indoor air quality is an important step in improving lung health,” said George Angevine, Senior Program Manager, National Grid.
For over 100 years the American Lung Association has been at the forefront of the Fight for Air. All proceeds from the Fight For Air Climb will directly fund lung disease research, advocacy and education, including smoking cessation programs, COPD/asthma management, advocacy for strong clean air standards, as well as support the Lung Association’s COVID-19 Action Initiative.
