Tampa Cyclists Raise Nearly $70K for Lung Health at Inaugural Gulf Coast Bike Trek

This morning, more than 100 local cyclists joined the American Lung Association in Tampa Bay to raise awareness for pediatric lung health. The first-ever Gulf Coast Bike Trek, presented by Raymond James, raised nearly $70,000 to support the Lung Association’s efforts to improve lung health and prevent lung disease.

Participants from across the Tampa area and beyond cycled along one of three scenic courses through Pinellas County: the 10-mile Chick-fil-A Family Ride, the 40-mile loop, and the 62-mile Metric Century Ride. Afterwards at the finish-line party, participants enjoyed refreshments and entertainment.

“This morning was an action-packed celebration of life and lung health,” said Steven Riddle, executive director of the American Lung Association in Tampa Bay. “Thank you to our participants, volunteers and sponsors who came together today to raise nearly $70,000, with momentum expected to bring us to $75,000. These funds will make a difference in the lives of children with lung disease. Because when you can’t breathe, nothing else matters.”

Pediatric pulmonologist Dr. John Prpich, who also serves as the Lung Association’s ambassador committee chair, gave a keynote speech at the Mission Moment. He was joined by several patients and their families to discuss living with pediatric lung disease, including asthma and RSV.

Here in Tampa, more than 42,000 children have been diagnosed with asthma. Nationwide, students miss nearly 14 million school days each year due to asthma. The Lung Association has resources available at Lung.org/asthma.

Money raised from the Gulf Coast Bike Trek supports the American Lung Association’s efforts to save lives through research, education and advocacy.
