Lung Association Welcomes Families from Across the West to “Run the Rocks” at 17th Annual Run/Walk Event

The American Lung Association’s “Run the Rocks” is the only timed race event to take place at the iconic Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, and this year, the fun takes place on October 8, 2023. This unique run/walk challenge combines breathtaking scenery and a rock ‘n’ roll vibe for both the 5K and the 1.3-mile run/walk. Both routes welcome well-behaved dogs to join their hoomans as well! The event hopes to raise $175,000 to support advocacy, programs, and critical lung health research in Colorado and across the country.

For one team leader, Matt Bowers, the event will be a bittersweet and difficult moment in his family’s life. His wife Emeli, who founded the team and led its fundraising efforts for the past several years, passed away recently after a long struggle with lung cancer. “Being part of the Lung Association’s Run the Rocks 2023 event holds an even greater meaning for my family,” said Matt. “Emeli led this team for many years, but this year we run without our team leader and inspiration. She put so much energy and effort into leading this every October, but this year we may not run with Emeli, but we certainly run for Emeli to raise money and awareness for all those with lung disease.” 

Sadly, the Bowers’ story is not uncommon. Lung cancer remains the number one cancer killer in Colorado and the United States, and today, more than 700,000 Coloradans live with some form of lung disease. 

“With more than 1,500 participants expected at this fabulous event, including many Coloradans whose lives have been forever changed by lung disease, we look to make a huge impact on lung health awareness in our state,” said Donna Peace, Executive Director of the American Lung Association in Colorado. “We invite everyone in the community to join us for this unique moment to celebrate health and work together to end lung disease.”
