Dr. Sally Wenzel will be a co-investigator. She has a long history of interest in asthma, severe asthma and their phenotypes. She was instrumental in identifying the specific issues of severe asthma and was part of the original (and ongoing) Severe Asthma Research Program (SARP). Working in both the University of Pittsburgh and previously at National Jewish, she has recruited hundreds of severe asthma patients for human-based research studies. She is widely known for her work on the pathobiology of asthma phenotypes, including a range of inflammatory components as measured in tissue and lung cells. She is a founding member of the Severe Asthma Research Program and has performed more bronchoscopies on severe asthma patients than anyone.
