Project: Discovering Genetic Mutations in Lung Cancer in People Who Never Smoked

Grant(s): Lung Cancer Discovery Award

As many as a quarter of lung cancers occur in individuals who have never smoked in their lifetime (never smokers). Lung cancers in never smokers have been proposed to be a different disease from those in smokers and is the seventh leading cause of cancer death worldwide if counted separately. However, the causes of lung cancers in never smokers are largely unknown because very few studies focus on these tumors. We will perform detailed studies to discover new disease-causing genes from 2,500 tumors of lung cancers in never smokers collected by the National Cancer Institute across the world. We expect to find novel drug targets and improve patient care.
