Project: Addressing Needs of Lung Cancer Patients Facing Risk of Recurrence

Grant(s): Innovation Award

We will study the survivorship needs of adults with lung cancer who receive treatment with curative intent yet face high risk that their cancer will return. This group is rarely included in survivorship research, and the transition from treatment to follow-up (surveillance) is an understudied phase of lung cancer. We have developed a quality-of-life program to serve as a bridge from the end of lung cancer treatment to surveillance. This five-session program is designed to enhance coping skills for navigating challenges of lung cancer survivorship including future uncertainty, residual symptom burden, and gaps in social support. Trained study clinicians will conduct program sessions with patients remotely via video conferencing, to facilitate access to participation. We will test the impact of the program versus enhanced usual care on improving quality of life. This study is a critical step toward addressing a critical but neglected phase of lung cancer care.
