Project: Shedding Light on Link Between Mutations and Metabolism in Lung Cancer

Grant(s): Innovation Award

Mutations in certain genes promote a form of metabolism conducive to lung cancer tumor growth. Defining the gene mutations in tumors that lead to such metabolic activities may suggest new therapeutic targets in cancer. Using genetic and metabolic analyses, we found that the balance between two sugars, fructose and mannose, is perturbed by a combination of the two most common mutations in lung cancer. We will study how these mutations elevate fructose-mannose metabolism in lung cancer and evaluate if targeting this pathway can be beneficial for treating lung cancer. These translational studies have the potential to identify novel therapeutic strategies.
