Project: Improving Diagnosis of Pulmonary Vascular Disease to Enhance Study of COPD

Grant(s): Catalyst Award

Pulmonary vascular disease, or changes to the vessels in the lungs, commonly occurs in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Despite the increased illness and death associated with severe pulmonary vascular disease, difficulties in diagnosis of pulmonary vascular disease have limited its study in COPD. Understanding early pulmonary vascular disease and its contribution to illness in COPD could identify new treatments for COPD patients. As a key first step, we will examine noninvasive approaches for accurately diagnosing pulmonary vascular disease and apply these approaches to evaluate the contribution of pulmonary vascular disease to COPD. The results will help define diagnostic tools and help decide whether future studies of therapies for pulmonary vascular disease in COPD should be undertaken.
