Dr. Andrea McKee is on a mission. A mission of hope.

Patients often think a lung cancer diagnosis is a lost cause. But that's not the case now.

"I'm a radiation oncologist," says Dr. McKee, "so I have treated patients and their families who are diagnosed with lung cancer for many years."

"And it wasn't until about 2006 when I started to do what's called stereotactic body radiation therapy that I realized that early stage lung cancer is highly curable. And once I realized that early stage lung cancer was highly curable, I became a believer in screening."

There is a lack of awareness of lung cancer that contributes to it being so deadly, particularly for women. I'm encouraging those at high risk to consider screening, and helping them know that they are not alone, that there is a community out there ready to support them that is helping to bring this terrible disease out of the shadows and into the light, where we can study it and defeat it.

"I want to see people have an opportunity to access screening, and that's the work that I'm doing in partnership with the American Lung Association.
