American Lung Association Now Recruiting 5-Person Charity Team for TCS New York City Marathon

Together the team will aim to raise $25,000 to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, including COVID-19

Today, the American Lung Association in New York announced that it is recruiting a five-person charity team to run in the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon. The Lung Association team will run with the goal to raise a cumulative $25,000 that will go towards the organization’s mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung diseases, including lung cancer and COVID-19.

“Running the New York City Marathon is a once in a lifetime experience, and doing it for a cause that you believe in can make it even more special,” said Erica Masin, executive director for the American Lung Association in Metro New York and Northern New Jersey. “This year especially, as we celebrate the reopening of New York and the return of the marathon, everyone has a deeper understanding of the Lung Association adage ‘when you can’t breathe, nothing else matters.’ We’re excited and honored to use this world class event as a platform to help raise funds and awareness for lung diseases like lung cancer and COVID-19.”

The Lung Association charity team will continue a multi-year tradition of participation in the TCS New York City Marathon, having raised a cumulative $205,000 over seven years. While the 2020 Marathon was canceled due to COVID-19, previous teams have included runners from all over the country running in honor or in memory of loved ones with lung disease, and in other cases, team members are coping with lung diseases themselves.

Money raised by the Lung Association team will support the Lung Association’s three-pronged approach of advocacy, education and research to create a world free of lung disease. This includes efforts to confront the youth vaping crisis, defend the Clean Air Act, fund new treatment and research for lung cancer, as well as support the Lung Association’s COVID-19 Action Initiative. The COVID-19 Action Initiative is a $25 million investment to address COVID-19 and protect against future respiratory virus pandemics. The initiative works with public and private entities to increase research collaboration and develop new vaccines, detection tests and treatment therapies.

Submissions for qualified runners are being accepted now through August 2, 2021. Each selected team member will be responsible for fundraising a minimum of $5,000.  More information and registration are available at lung.org/nyc-marathon or contact [email protected]
