John Prpich, MD, FAAP, will hit the stage on January 21 to honor local kids with lung disease, nurses and respiratory therapists, and to raise awareness for lung health through the American Lung Association in Florida’s virtual Lip Sync For Lungs event.
Dr. Prpich is the medical director for pediatric respiratory care at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital and is board certified in general pediatrics and pediatric pulmonology. He also serves as the medical director for Aveanna Healthcare’s pediatric day health care center in Brandon, a medical daycare for complex and technologically dependent children. He is a member of the quality medical advisory committee for Children’s Medical Services and serves on the board of directors for Sunshine Health. His work focuses on caring for children with asthma and other lung diseases.
“I love taking care of children, I get along with them better than adults. I fell in love with pulmonary because you get to know the kids, but you also get to take care of some complex issues. Asthma is a big part of what we do,” said Dr. Prpich.
On January 21, he will take the stage for the virtual Lip Sync For Lungs, a local event where local celebrities execute lip sync performances to songs of their choice, all to win the top spot of Lip Sync “VIRTUAL LIVE BATTLE” Champion. For his performance, he plans to recognize the local community.
“I can’t dance, and I am not a performer. At my core, I am painfully shy, so I try to force myself into situations to get over the shyness,” he said. “I plan to use the performance to highlight all the people who are a part of what I do every day. It will be about the patients, respiratory therapists, nurses, families, and all of the people who help me day in and day out. My performance will convey that although we are separate, we are together, and we are one community.”
Money raised at the event fund the Lung Association’s efforts to end lung cancer and lung disease, as well as support the organization’s COVID-19 Action Initiative. The COVID-19 Action Initiative is a $25 million investment to address COVID-19 and protect against future respiratory virus pandemics. The initiative works with public and private entities to increase research collaboration and develop new vaccines, detection tests and treatment therapies.
“I support this event because anything that we can do to get the message out about lung disease is important,” he said. “I also want to highlight the work of the American Lung Association and raise awareness about health and good behaviors. A big part of what I do is education, so the resources and education that the Lung Association provides to the community is key to that.”
For the event, the celebrity with the most votes will win the top spot of Lip Sync “VIRTUAL LIVE BATTLE” Champion. Votes are $1 each, so $25 will get Dr. Prpich 25 votes, and $100 will get him 100 votes. Learn more about the event, get tickets and vote for Dr. John Prpich at LipSyncForLungsTampa.org.
