TAMPA, FL | October 13, 2021
Today, the American Lung Association launched its 2022 Fight For Air Climb Firefighter Calendar to honor local heroes and support its vision of a world free of lung disease. The second annual calendar features Jennifer Shedler from St. Petersburg Fire Rescue.
Every year, thousands of firefighters race up hundreds of stairs in full firefighter gear weighing over 40 pounds during American Lung Association Fight For Air Climbs in more than 40 cities nationwide. Shedler was chosen as one of the American Lung Association’s top Fight For Air Climb supporters nationwide. She has participated in the Tampa Fight For Air Climb for four years and raised almost $2,000 for the Lung Association.
“I truly am blessed to have the opportunity to share my excitement of being a firefighter and my enjoyment of service to others by being involved with the American Lung Association and the Fight for Air Climb,” said Shedler. “I got involved while in fire academy to help raise money and awareness for my high school friend’s parents who passed away from lung cancer. I fell in love with the challenge of the climb and have been an advocate for lung research ever since. Every person I have worked with in the Lung Association has been wonderful and passionate.”
The mission of the American Lung Association hits close to home with firefighters. Respiratory diseases remain a significant health issue for firefighters and emergency responders. Firefighters are at a higher risk to develop chronic issues, including lingering cough, hoarseness, asthma, and allergies and in more extreme cases, may be diagnosed with lung or bronchial cancer.
“Firefighters like Jennifer are not only out there saving lives every day, they fundraise and participate in events like our Fight For Air Climb in their free time,” said Steven Riddle, executive director of the Lung Association. “We are amazed by their daily sacrifice and are honored that Jennifer, as well as so many other local heroes participate in our event.”
The 2022 calendar will feature photos of our top fundraising firefighters and firefighter teams at their local Fight For Air Climbs. It also includes fire safety tips, statistics on how fires affect our lung health and tips for your Fight For Air Climb. All proceeds will support the American Lung Association’s mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through education, advocacy and research.
