Breathe Easier with Asthma Management or BEAM program expands in Boys & Girls Clubs with help from the American Lung Association in New Jersey

The American Lung Association in New Jersey is excited to announce that discussion is underway with the Boys and Girls Clubs in New Jersey to implement the BEAM program for year 3.

BEAM is designed to raise awareness about asthma and educate youth and their parents or caregivers about asthma and how best to manage it. The pilot program was launched during the 2014-2015 grant year across at 36 sites in 9 counties across New Jersey, where the Boys & Girls Clubs implemented the American Lung Association’s Open Airways for Schools and the Asthma Awareness Program.

Across 36 sites, 391 Club members participated in Open Airways for Schools and 1,489 Club members participated in the Asthma Awareness Program.

Due to the overwhelming success of the pilot phase, the BEAM program was renewed for a 2nd year with the Boys & Girls Clubs in New Jersey. In order to help meet their program goals, the Boys & Girls Clubs contracted with the American Lung Association in New Jersey to help train addition staff to deliver Open Airways for Schools, Lungtropolis as well as enhance the Asthmas Awareness Program.

The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey awarded a grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs in New Jersey to implement Phase 2 of the BEAM program in 16 Boys & Girls Club sites located in twelve counties with high childhood asthma prevalence. The program is serving 2,500 youth ages 5-18 from September 2015 through November 2016. The American Lung Association in New Jersey trained Boys & Girls Club Program staff to become certified facilitators of Open Airways for Schools as well as the Asthma Awareness Program.
