Health Impacts of Diesel Fuel

Diesel fuel emissions can have a significant effect on the air we breathe. These emissions include particulate matter, hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides and carbon monoxide which can all have an effect on our health. The potential health problems from diesel emissions include: aggravation of respiratory and cardiovascular disease, respiratory infection, chronic bronchitis, acute respiratory symptoms, aggravation of existing asthma, decreased lung function, premature mortality, lung inflammation and emphysema. Diesel exhaust also contains gaseous components, such as benzene, that are carcinogenic. Acute exposure to diesel exhaust can lead to cancer and other symptoms such as headache, eye irritation and nausea.

What Can We Do To Reduce Diesel Pollution

  • Retrofit your vehicle with emission control devices
  • Reduce unnecessary idling by shutting off your engine
  • Use anti-idling technologies
  • Use cleaner burning fuels (Biodiesel, Natural Gas, Propane)

Retrofit Technologies

  • Diesel Particulate Filter
  • Closed Crankcase Ventilation System
  • Diesel Oxidation Catalyst
  • Diesel Multi-stage Filter

Idle-Reduction Technologies

  • Electrified Parking Spaces
  • Shore Connection System and Alternative Maritime Power
  • Auxiliary power units and generator sets
  • Fuel Operated Heaters
  • Battery Air Conditioning Systems
  • Thermal Storage Systems
