Help Colorado Teens Break Their Addiction to Tobacco

Your Donation Can Be Life-Changing and Life-Saving

The Problem:
The FDA has declared teen e-cigarette use an epidemic and sadly Colorado is the worst in the nation. According to the Centers For Disease Control (CDC), Colorado now has the highest high school e-cigarette use rate in the United States at 27% - twice the national average.  E-cigarette companies are designing high-tech devices that can be used with liquids that come in kid friendly flavors like bubble gum, grape, cotton candy, and the list goes on.   The good news is we have a program called N-O-T (Not On Tobacco) that has proven to help teens quit tobacco use (including e-cigarettes) in Colorado. The bad news, due to funding shortfalls at the state’s tobacco prevention program, funding for our N-O-T program ended September 1 after more than a decade of funding.

Our loss in funding comes just as schools are opening and requesting N-O-T for the fall session.

The Solution:
N-O-T has consistently delivered 20% plus quit rates for Colorado teens who have completed the multi-session program.  Our most recent data is available here.  As you can see, N-O-T helps more than 20% quit cigarettes and more than 30% quit e-cigarettes (and teens even quit marijuana use).  And our data shows that more than 50% of teens who complete the program report exercising more, eating better, and better able to manage their stress.

N-O-T is a life changing, life-saving program.

We need your donation to keep the Colorado N-O-T program going and growing to meet the need from schools and youth based sites who want to help teens address and quit e-cigarettes and other tobacco products.  To donate to support our efforts to reach Colorado teens and the schools and youth sites that serve those teens, click the donate button on this page.  Your donation will go specifically for the Colorado N-O-T program.

Please also help us pass the word and share page with friends and encourage them to donate.

Not On Tobacco (N-O-T) is the American Lung Association's voluntary smoking cessation program for teens 14-19. Over the 10-week program, participants learn to identify their reasons for smoking, healthy alternatives to tobacco use, and people who will support them in their efforts to quit.

The best thing about N-O-T? It really works. N-O-T is a structured approach to smoking cessation based on the social cognitive theory. Studies of 12,000 teens participating in the N-O-T program nationally found that approximately 90 percent of the teens enrolled in the N-O-T program either quit smoking or cut back.

In Colorado, NOT has successfully helped teens quit cigarettes, chew, and e-cigarettes. Here is a link to the results of the 2016-17 school year.
