Statement of Olivia Gertz, President and CEO of the American Lung Association in California, on the passing of State Senator Sharon Runner

(July 14, 2016)

Sacramento, CA - The American Lung Association in California is saddened to hear about the recent passing of State Senator Sharon Runner. Senator Runner was a true champion for all those affected by lung illnesses, as she herself suffered from lung disease and underwent a double lung transplant.

Senator Runner worked closely with the Lung Association on various initiatives to promote lung health, most notably on designating the 2nd week of May as National Women’s Lung Health Week. The Lung Association established National Women’s Lung Health Week in 2015 to raise awareness about the rise of lung disease in women, honor those who lost the fight against such illnesses, and acknowledge the work being done to prevent and treat lung disease.

The American Lung Association in California offer our condolences to Senator Runner’s family, friends, and colleagues. She will be deeply missed.
