This Saturday, May 18 at 8:30 a.m., lung cancer meets its match at the American Lung Association in Philadelphia’s LUNG FORCE Walk. Lung cancer kills more people each year than breast, colon, prostate and pancreatic cancers combined.
“Lung cancer gets less attention than any other cancers, so it’s much harder to get grants for research. Funding by the Lung Association through this event is critical for supporting innovative and novel projects in the early stage of lung cancer and ultimately saving lives. That’s why hundreds in the community are participating in the LUNG FORCE Walk,” said Caroline Hutchinson, Executive Director of the Lung Association in Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia LUNG FORCE Walk is a 3-mile walk around historic Olde City passed Independence Mall, Franklin Square, Washington Square and other city landmarks. The event brings together advocates for lung cancer, asthma, COPD, as well as lung cancer patients currently fighting for their lives.
Le Ann Frost is a lung cancer patient walking with her team on Saturday. Her team has raised more than $5,000 and counting.
“I walk to honor of my sister and father who lost their lung cancer battles and for those currently fighting lung cancer like myself. I walk to advocate for more funding and research since I am benefitting from recent advances in treatment and so current and future lung cancer patients have a fighting chance,” said Frost.
The LUNG FORCE Walk helps raise awareness of the 10,380 Pennsylvanians that will be diagnosed with lung cancer, but also raises funds for critical programing, like:
- Educational programs to help local children better manage their asthma.
- Free programs to help people quit smoking.
- Outreach to fight e-cigarette and vaping epidemic.
Check-in and activities for the event begin at 8:30 a.m. and the opening ceremony will start at 10:15 a.m. at 2nd Street Plaza in Headhouse Square; the event location is near 2nd and Lombard Streets. Those who fundraise will receive a commemorative LUNG FORCE Walk t-shirt when they raise $100 or more.
The Walk is sponsored by Kindred Hospitals of Philadelphia, Penn Medicine and Genentech.
