The American Lung Association is hosting an The Asthma Educator Institute™ on May 22-23, 2018 at the Berks County Community Foundation located on 237 Court St., in Reading, Pa. Open to healthcare professionals only, AEI is a two-day preparatory course for individuals who want to implement asthma guidelines-based care and those qualified to take the National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB) examination. This Asthma Educator Institute was funded in part by the Dean Milbrandt III’s Ride for Asthma; held annually in Berks County.

“Research has shown improved asthma outcomes in patients who are well-educated and informed about their disease and asthma management. Certified Asthma Educators (AE-Cs) play a vital role in providing focused education to asthma patients and their caregivers, above and beyond what the patient might otherwise receive from an uncertified practitioner,” said Deborah P. Brown, Chief Mission Officer, American Lung Association. “The American Lung Association is honored to partner with Dean Milbrandt III’s Ride for Asthma, which is dedicated to helping kids with asthma learn how they can live and enjoy life in spite of their illness.”

The AEI was developed with experts in the field with asthma and it reflects the National Institute of Health, Expert Panel Report 3: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma. AEI is a professional education course that targets frontline healthcare professionals, such as: nurses, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, other licensed or credentialed healthcare professionals, and educators with 1,000 or more direct hours of asthma education who are eligible to take the national asthma certification exam. In addition, the course is a great refresher for AE-C’s preparing for recertification.

The overall course objectives will include:

  • Preparing participants to provide NHLBI and NAEPP guideline-directed asthma care to patients, families and healthcare providers across all settings.
  • Identifying the various roles of the asthma educator.
  • Helping prepare participants to pass the NAECB exam.
  • Networking with healthcare providers, educators and organizations surrounding asthma care and asthma care policies.

There is a $350 registration fee to attend the AEI. Scholarship opportunities may be available for Berks County residents and workers. Email Shelly Cree at [email protected] to find out if you qualify and for more information.
